Client service is our primary goal at Smyth Law Office. We pride ourselves in providing a comfortable atmosphere where our clients can receive personal and professional attention from their attorney.
The majority of our work is in the field of consumer bankruptcy law. No attorney in California understands this area of law better than we do. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to protect you, your family and your home from all creditors, including mortgages, taxes, business debts and credit cards.
In addition, we handle cases in the areas of estate planning – wills and trusts, civil litigation and criminal law cases. Smyth Law Office has had success in winning large civil judgments and gaining reversals in appellate court on felony convictions.
Smyth Law Office was founded in 1974 by David A. Smyth shortly after he graduated from the University of San Diego Law School. Prior to starting his own firm, David was doing criminal law and civil law work in the Los Angeles area. He decided that he would start his own firm out of a couple of open offices in his mother’s (Nora's Smyth) medical placement business, M.D. Placement Bureau.
Originally located at Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, Smyth Law Office began handling a variety of cases. The office was a general practice firm handling cases in family law, criminal law, civil litigation and bankruptcy law. A few years later in 1977, David's identical twin brother, Andrew E. Smyth, joined the firm. Smyth Law Office Office was born. Prior to this, Andrew was working at the Riverside Public Defender, practicing criminal law. During this time, Andrew gained valuable trial experience and valuable experience with clients.
In 1980, the number of bankruptcies in Los Angeles began steadily increasing. David and Andrew began taking more bankruptcy cases and soon found themselves concentrating on consumer bankruptcy law. As a result, bankruptcy law came to comprise 90 percent of the cases handled by Smyth Law Office.
In 1981, David opened an office in Oakland, California, allowing Smyth Law Office to provide legal services in both Southern and northern California.
In 2007, Andrew's oldest son, Stephen, joined Smyth Law Office after graduating from Whittier Law School in Santa Ana, California. Stephen was a member of the Whittier Law Review, a highly sought-after position by most law students.
In 2009, Andrew's second son, William, joined Smyth Law Office after graduating from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California.
In 2014, Stephen and William formed SW Smyth LLP and took the position of joint partners in the law firm. They still continue to practice law side by side with their father, Andrew. After almost 35 years in the legal field focusing primarily on bankruptcy, Smyth Law Office has an unparalleled expertise in the area of bankruptcy law. The firm is well respected in the legal community.
Smyth Law Office has always been, and is even more so today, a family-run law firm. We believe this allows our clients to have a comfortable environment where they will receive personal attention and professional advice from their attorney.
